Industrial hiring works best when employers understand both the technical requirements and the people behind the work. This guide outlines practical considerations for hiring teams across manufacturing, mining, energy and other industrial operations.
Start with the equipment
The title “millwright” covers many different environments. Ask candidates which systems they have maintained: pumps, gearboxes, compressors, conveyors, hydraulic circuits, production lines or heavy processing equipment. Seek specific examples of failures they diagnosed and repairs they completed.
Assess troubleshooting, not just tenure
Years of service do not automatically indicate diagnostic ability. A practical interview question might describe a recurring bearing failure and ask how the candidate would investigate lubrication, alignment, loading, contamination and installation practices. Listen for a systematic process rather than one memorized answer.
Check safety judgment
Industrial maintenance involves stored energy, moving equipment and complex isolations. Discuss lockout procedures, verification of zero energy and situations where a candidate stopped work because conditions were unsafe. Safety should be evaluated as an operational habit, not merely as a certificate.
Understand preventive and predictive maintenance
Ask how candidates use inspections, vibration observations, lubrication records, work orders and failure history to reduce repeat breakdowns. A strong candidate can connect maintenance practices to equipment reliability and production outcomes.
Evaluate teamwork and shift fit
Maintenance work depends on coordination with operations, electricians, planners and supervisors. Discuss handovers, work documentation, emergency callouts and communication under pressure. Confirm that the candidate understands the actual shift and location expectations.
Bring the assessment together
Use a consistent scorecard for equipment familiarity, troubleshooting, safety, reliability practices and collaboration. Technical depth matters, but so does the ability to perform safely and effectively in your specific facility.
